Tiguan Tough: We join Volkswagen for...

Straight off an overnight flight to Africa, were handed the key to one of three production prototypes and pointed down a rugged trail in a vast game park close to the vibrant Namibian capital of Windhoek. Weve traveled to the former German colony, now a thriving tourist destination, to accompany a team of VW engineers at the end of a 24-month development program for the compact sport/ utility vehicle that is due to reach North American showrooms around this time next year. But before we even get a chance to acquaint ourselves properly with Wolfsburgs latest model, were suddenly dodging all sorts of obstacles as we put its off-road prowess to the test.

These are not the conditions for which the Tiguan was conceivedor is expected to excel. Yet despite its on-road bias, the baby brother to the more robust Touareg manages to make surprisingly good progress over the rocky terrain.

JAS ambitions will be officially supported by Pirelli, providing factory support and custom developed tyres to suit one of the most competitive front wheel drive rally cars.

BMW 335i Cabrio

A BMW convertible has always been a desirable drop-top, and especially the 3 Series cabriolet draws a lot of attention. This sunseeker grabs the attention of the upwardly mobile trendsetters who are eager for flashy wheels that will make them look cool.

And the latest 3 Series cabriolet is no different. It is again a trendsetting and distinctive topless number. However, the big news on this model is the fact that it now comes with a retractable hard-top roof.

You will be forgiven if you see a 3 Series cabrio with the top up jetting pass you and mistake it for a coupe. Most of the car's design cues, such as the nose, are similar to that of its coupe sibling. Only if you see the side profile you'll notice the difference. The cabriolet version appears "flatter" and not as curvaceous as the coupe.

A tax rate that enrages Middle England

In this current boom, the super-rich are making such extraordinary fortunes that they are not just stoking the suspicion of the working class, but the well-paid middle classes, too. The battle lines in Britain’s class war are shifting: it is no longer Citizen Smith and the Tooting Popular Front agitating for change, but Mr and Mrs Smith and the Wimbledon Neighbourhood Watch scheme who are crying "Power to the People!"

University-educated men and women working hard and enjoying successful careers in public companies are finding themselves frozen out of swaths of the London property market by a new breed of wealth: hedge fund managers, private equity partners and investment bankers. There are signs of a new kind of fissure between the reasonably well-off and the absurdly wealthy – not a blue-collar/white-collar divide, but suit-and-tie versus open-necked shirt; not over how much you are paid, but how: are you someone who measures your earnings in salary or capital gains?

In this context, Nicholas Ferguson’s observation that many private equity executives are "paying less tax than a cleaning lady" has only played to the politics of middle-class envy.

Williams: Lewis is unique

Sir Frank Williams on Friday night described Formula One rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton as a unique talent.

The Williams team boss, who has won nine constructors' titles and secured seven drivers' crowns for the likes of Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, claimed Hamilton's instant impact on the sport was unparalleled.

"In my opinion," Williams said of the 22-year-old McLaren driver. "I've never seen anyone arrive and be so successful so quickly. That is to say from his first race. It is quite remarkable. I am looking hard to find fault with him and he is very nice, which is quite unusual, too."

Williams, who has been in motor racing for almost 40 years, was asked if Hamilton reminded him of any other drivers in his long career.

"Nobody," he replied.

Who's to blame for dangerous subprime mortgages?

We've all been reading stories about the subprime mortgage meltdown for months, but a comprehensive study by the Reinvestment Fund, a nonprofit that works to stimulate growth in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, made the issue hit home.

A Philadelphia Inquirer front-page story on the study offered some heartbreaking cases of Philadelphians likely to lose their homes, and perhaps tumble into bankruptcy. It's a tragedy, an outrage.

To be precise, the TRF study was on predatory lending -- selling high-risk mortgages to people who cannot afford them. That's not quite the same as subprime mortgages, which are loans to people with poor credit. Not every subprime mortgage is predatory.

But most predatory loans are subprime mortgages.

The first homeowner described in the story bought a $66,900 house in 2003 with plans to fix it up and rent it out.

CURRENCIES: Euro Lower After Trichet; Yen Slumps As Carry Back In ...

The euro fell against the dollar on Thursday after the European Central Bank hiked its key interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 3.75% as expected and said rates are now "moderate" rather than "low." Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the Frankfurt-based ECB, which sets interest-rate policies in the 13 countries that use the euro, said rates remain "accommodative" and that the central bank will "very closely" monitor price developments, an indication that a rate hike in the next quarter is likely. But Trichet did make one concession, saying that rates are now "moderate." He added that he wasn't preparing markets for a "restrictive" policy. "Trichet opted for a less hawkish tone when he said that interest rates are now moderate rather than low," said Kathy Lien, chief strategist at DailyFX.com.

President Yudhoyono Reshuffles Cabinet

After months of continued pressure by political parties and the media that the President reshuffle his cabinet, - and two weeks after the President finally relented to the pressure when, on Monday, 7 May, President Yudhoyono announced a limited Cabinet shake-up. This is the second reshuffle following the first in December 2005, when the President was forced to change his economic team in the wake of government's slapping a 100 percent increase in fuel prices at the pumps, which resulted in spiraling prices nation-wide, and ensuing strong protests from the people.

This time around, the reasons for immediate change were cited as: slow investments in the real sector; a stagnant industrial sector; increased unemployment and lay-offs; and increased number of poor, despite much improved macro-economic performance, namely a stable Rupiah, decreased inflation rate, and a spectacular growth in Jakarta's share market.

Industry players plead for government aid: What have you done for ...

Many operators of tourist establishments in Lebanon are furious with the government over what they say has been a pattern of neglect of a key moneymaker for the country. They complain that the government has dragged its feet in providing help for tourism, even as the sector sees closures on a regular basis. They also argue that the government's pledges of financial support are meager when compared to the number of jobs that have been lost - and the number of Lebanese who have emigrated."We were invited by the government to invest in the sector but we were led astray," said Jean Beyrouthy, secretary general of the Touristic Federation. After the summer 2006 war with Israel, the government made a number of proposals to help the sector recover from the conflict. But according to industry insiders, the sector has not received a penny of government support to date.

West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Two college football programs were rocked this weekend with players getting arrested which might jeopardize their future with the schools. Two University of Illinois wide receivers were jailed on the suspension of possessing stolen property while South Carolina's prized quarterback recruit Stephen Garcia was arrested after allegedly keying a man's car.

The University of Illinois incident involved sophomore wide receivers Jody Ellis and Derrick McPhearson. AP reported the two were in a traffic accident on Friday and police found stolen property in their car's trunk while investigating the crash.

Police in Champaign, Illinois could not verify that report but the school's website did confirm the arrest.

Ron Zook, the team's head coach, later released a statement saying the two players were suspended indefinitely from the club.

UK voices concern at Iran 'sabre-rattling'

Britain said yesterday it was concerned at Iranian "sabre-rattling" about possibly putting captured British naval personnel on trial and for the first time voiced regret that the incident had occurred.

Iran's ambassador to Moscow was quoted as saying the 15 Britons captured eight days ago may face trial for illegally entering the Islamic Republic's territorial waters. But he later denied having made the comments, Iran's IRNA news agency said.

Britain insists the sailors were seized in Iraqi waters and Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett said such talk worried her.

"Obviously, I am concerned. It is not the first person to have made sabre-rattling noises," she told reporters after a European Union foreign ministers' meeting in Germany.

But she struck a conciliatory note when asked by an Iranian television reporter if she had a message for Iran, saying: "The message I want to send is I think everyone regrets that this position has arisen.

Lawmakers Say Proposed Change in Auto Insurance Necessary

Mar. 19--Lawmakers are considering a change to Colorado's auto insurance system that critics say could cost consumers money but proponents are hailing as necessary aid to medical providers. Senate Bill 193 would require all motorists to have coverage of $25,000 in health benefits and $25,000 in rehabilitation. Proponents say the bill, sponsored by Sen. Lois Tochtrop, D-Thornton, is necessary because trauma and other medical providers are losing money under the state's three-year-old tort insurance system. The state's old personal injury protection insurance covered drivers who were hurt in an accident, regardless of whose fault it was. Each insurance company took care of its own client's costs.

But since that coverage became optional in 2003, drivers who don't have it have suffered huge bills.

Clothing with a conscience Dressing 'cruelty-free' doesn't have to mean sacrificing style

North of Boston image consultant Ginger Burr makes a silent statement every morning while getting dressed for work - her stylish wardrobe is 100 percent vegan.

What's vegan, you ask? Veganism is the practice of not eating meat, fish, eggs or dairy products - anything from an animal. And most people who follow the practice - who are known vegans - typically shun clothing made from animal byproducts, including leather, wool, cashmere, suede, shearling, down, silk and fur because they believe the animals are treated inhumanely.

"Veganism is more than what you eat, it is a personal philosophy of living a life of compassion toward all living beings," Burr said. "Sure, it takes a little extra thought and effort. But as my mother has always said, anything worth doing is worth doing well."

Burr, who hasn't eaten red meat in 25 years, decided to go vegan roughly a year-and-a-half ago after reading about what she considered to be cruel treatment of animals in the dairy industry.

Separating politics from pursuit of justice

Former Attorney General John Ashcroft had a standard spiel for new U.S. attorneys: "You have to leave politics at the door to do this job properly."

Maintaining that independence, without fear of repercussions, is the bedrock principle at stake in the controversy over the firings of eight U.S. attorneys. As the top law enforcement official in each of their jurisdictions, these federal prosecutors have the power to destroy reputations, careers and even lives.

They're political appointees, but they're supposed to follow the evidence wherever it leads, without fear or favor. While presidents have the power to remove them for any reason, tradition holds that prosecutors should stay on the job unless they're corrupt or incompetent.

When Democrat Bill Clinton became president, he fired all but one of the U.S.

"But if you've been fairly sedentary during the winter, then you can get injured out there. It's usually a matter of 'too much, too fast.'""

Virtual racing games linked to risk taking

WASHINGTON: Psychologists have taken the "media priming" effects of popular video console and PC-based games on the road, finding that virtual racing seems to lead to aggressive driving and a propensity for risk taking. Extending prior findings on how aggressive virtual-shooter games increase aggression-related thoughts, feelings and behaviors, researchers at Munich's Ludwig-Maximilians University and the Allianz Center for Technology found that of 198 men and women, those who play more virtual car-racing games were more likely to report that they drive aggressively and get in accidents. Less frequent virtual racing was associated with more cautious driving. According to this press release issued by EurekAlert, the findings appear in the March issue of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, which is published by the American Psychological Association.

I handled 9/11 from A to Z: Qaida No. 3

WASHINGTON: They called him the "Forrest Gump of terrorism" for his involvement in many terrorist acts and plans across the world going back to the mid-1990s. At a hearing in Guantanamo Bay last week, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed showed the moniker was well deserved, owning up his role in 31 terrorist plots, including 9/11, the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993, and a host of plots and plans in between.

In a rambling, disjointed statement at a military hearing, the most coherent sentence the man initialed as KSM said was "I was responsible for the 9/11 operation, from A to Z." He expressed some regret over the incident ("I'm not happy that 3,000 been killed in America. I feel sorry even. I don't like to kill children and the kids") but rationalized it later saying, "The language of war is victims."

Among his involvement in many plots was one in which he said there was "surveying and financing for the destruction of the Israeli Embassy in India, Azerbaijan, the Philippines and Australia." There were also assassination plots against Presidents Clinton and Carter, and the attempt on the life of Pakistani's military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

Erie County's population is shrinking, but that's not news to City of Tonawanda resident Jane Mago.Six of Mago's seven children have moved out of the area, two to Virginia, two to Florida, one to Tennessee and one to Albany."Work took them out of the area," Mago said. "They're all very loyal to the area. They don't hate it here, but there wasn't anything for them here in their particular fields."Even though it's difficult not seeing her children and grandchildren as much as she'd like, she understands that young people have to go where they can find jobs, Mago said."The high cost of living and taxes also didn't help," she said. "Other states have much better taxes."Hers is a story common to many local families, one told in long-distance phone bills and birthday cards delivered by post instead of in person — and it's confirmed by census data that reveals a precipitous decline in local numbers.Cost of doing businessThe first thing that comes to mind for many in the area is finding work.

Roberts Hopes To Take Pressure Off Bonds

The way Dave Roberts sees it, the San Francisco Giants have to do more than just watch Barry Bonds.

"I think this team has obviously always been centered around Barry and waiting for him to do something really special, but I think guys up and down the lineup still need to do their jobs," Roberts said. "For me, it's needing to get on base and provide energy and stealing bases. That's my job, my role this year and I'm excited about my role."

For the first time in years, the Giants have a prototypical leadoff man in Roberts. He is energetic, gets on base and regularly steals bags. He's also a welcoming, friendly face to his teammates in the clubhouse who has been a fan favorite at every stop.

Roberts will bat in front of Omar Vizquel, giving San Francisco two base-stealing threats at the top of the lineup the Giants hope will be key in making the club a contender again.

Tax breaks expected for green cars

OTTAWA -- Industry analysts say the Conservative government is on the right track with new tax incentives expected for fuel-efficient vehicles in Monday's budget Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced this winter that the government would soon take steps to make environmentally friendly vehicles more affordable, as part of an agenda to promote action on climate change and cleaner air.

Advanced technology vehicles such as hybrids, which run on combined power from gasoline and a rechargeable battery, are much more efficient than conventional cars, but they often have a price tag that is several thousand dollars more expensive.

"It would certainly be useful to have some sort of incentive to help bridge the gap between that type of a vehicle and a normal vehicle on the road," said David Adams, president of the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers of Canada.

Walk 'n' roll

Becca Clark held her mothers hand while walking through a local shopping mall on a recent Sunday. Then she let go and coasted down the tiled hallway, her pink-and-white sneakers gliding across the floor. As easily as she launched, Becca then stopped, stepping back into a regular walking pattern. Was it magic? Not really. She was wearing Heelys, the hottest craze in tween footwear. "A lot of people wear them," said Becca, 11, from Lewis Center. "You can go faster, and sometimes you can race with them." How do they work? The chunky, soft-soled sneakers are similar to skateboarding shoes yet boast a thick rubber wheel in each heel that can be used and removed as the wearer chooses. After gaining momentum from a walking start, the wearer slightly shifts his or her body weight to the heels, allowing the wheels to glide along for several feet.

Speeding tickets hard to get past

The Fayetteville Police Department and Highway Patrol hope the policy change will discourage speeding and make the roads safer. But neither agency said it had complaints about how speeding tickets were disposed of before the change.

Before the policy change, it was common for speeders to pay lawyers to visit privately with an assistant prosecutor to arrange for their speeding tickets to be dropped. The driver didn’t have to go to court and suffered no penalty other than a legal bill of several hundred dollars.

"What’s the lesson learned for that person?" asked Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Bob Kidd.

Under the new policy, speeding tickets can be pleaded down to a reduced charge. They almost never will be dropped.

This will cost speeders more in fines and court costs, increase their odds of losing their licenses for repeat offenses and can drive up their insurance rates.

Promising careers? Teacher, salesman, mechanic

If you're about to graduate high school and have abso-friggin-lutely no idea how you'll make money after your parents cut you off, Manpower Inc. says the three career paths mostly likely to offer jobs are teaching, sales and mechanics. Though we highly respect those who choose to form young minds, we wouldn't want days filled with screaming kids and badly written book reports filled with horrid spelling, redundancy, incomplete thoughts, comma splices and redundancy. In sales you might get lucky enough to sell (and occasionally drive) high-end German sports cars, but more likely you'd either get stuck peddling vacuum cleaners door to door or, worse, pushing high-interest loans on unsuspecting economy car shoppers. That leaves car repair as Autoblog readers' only logical choice from Manpower's list.

Mississippi, Louisiana and Michigan are the frontrunners in people behind on their mortgages and in danger of losing their homes.

Analysts say many homeowners staved off foreclosure a few years ago by refinancing to more risky adjustable-rate mortgages with lower monthly payments.

Now those homeowners and investors are struggling to hold on as their payments begin to increase.

The statistics come from the Mortgage Bankers Association's quarterly snapshot of the housing market. The figures are for October, November and December of 2006. .

Evolutionary paleoneurology. The mind reels.

This week's cover story in Newsweek, "The Evolution Revolution," is about evolutionary paleoneurology. It is the study of the brains and minds of ancient hominids, dating back to 7 million years ago. Newsweek reporter Sharon Begley gives a credulous tour of the standard Darwinist speculations: we can tell when humans first started wearing clothing by genetic analysis of modern body lice, or perhaps human society was the result of the emergence of the gene for oxytocin, a hormone that causes mothers to secrete milk and that may influence social behavior in humans. Evolutionary paleoneurologists claim to know some of what ancient hominids actually thought by studying fragments of their fossilized skulls. Ms. Begley tells us that "paleoneurology is documenting when structures that power the human mind arose, shedding light on how our ancestors lived and thought." What can we really know about what ancient hominids thought?

I do research on living brains.

UBS analyst Tony Lesiak considers this event a re-rating opportunity that could demonstrate the valuation differences between First Quantum and miners in the U.K.

Mr. Lesiak revised his price target to $105 from $100 and has a "buy" rating on First Quantum shares.

Forex reserves hit all-time low

A number of state institutions had their requests for foreign currency from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) turned down during the past two months, amid reports that reserves have hit an all time low. Investigations proved that the Registrar General (RG), the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), Air Zimbabwe and other state institutions have made applications for foreign currency but were told by governor Gideon Gono that the central bank couldn't provide.
Sources within the RBZ forex section revealed that reserves had drastically fallen over the past three months owing to continuous falls in the levels of exports. The rising of trade and exchange rates on the parallel market, which Gono has failed to tame since taking office in 2003, had also affected reserves, the sources said.
Registrar General Tobaiwa Mudede has said the operations of his department are at a virtual halt due to lack of foreign currency to import vitally required ink and material used to make passports and identity cards.

Appeal of smaller cars grows

You've seen them on Canadian streets for years in ever-growing numbers -- compact cars like the Honda Civic and Mazda3, subcompacts like the Toyota Echo hatchback, and baby-SUVs like Ford's Escape. Now the newest of those mite-sized vehicles are the majority.

For the first time since car dealers opened for business in Canada, more than half of all retail buyers bought a small, fuel efficient vehicle last year, new research shows.

The data, compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, suggests most Canadians are already making the kind of auto-buying choices that will reduce their footprint on the environment. And it means that if the federal and provincial governments really want to make a difference to reduce vehicle emissions, they should focus on getting older beaters off the road instead of targeting new cars and trucks, the consultancy says.

Cashback is a sweet, melancholy comedy for rueful romantics that should have landed here to honour St. Valentine. But we'll happily take it in the name of St. Patrick.

This expanded feature-length version of the 2006 Oscar-nominated short film by hugely talented young British writer-director Sean Ellis deals with the unhappy consequences of being dumped by a girlfriend.

The question asked is, What is love, anyway? And while we're at it, What is beauty? As formulated by shoe-gazing art student Ben Willis (appealing Sean Biggerstaff, the Quidditch captain in the first two Harry Potter films), there is no easy answer.

Ben is in pain. One day he's thick as thieves with Suzy (Michelle Ryan). The next, she's ditched him for a bigger man on campus. Because he's a sensitive artist, he takes the news like a shaft to the heart. Buy-in-Home.
