Erie County's population is shrinking, but that's not news to City of Tonawanda resident Jane Mago.Six of Mago's seven children have moved out of the area, two to Virginia, two to Florida, one to Tennessee and one to Albany."Work took them out of the area," Mago said. "They're all very loyal to the area. They don't hate it here, but there wasn't anything for them here in their particular fields."Even though it's difficult not seeing her children and grandchildren as much as she'd like, she understands that young people have to go where they can find jobs, Mago said."The high cost of living and taxes also didn't help," she said. "Other states have much better taxes."Hers is a story common to many local families, one told in long-distance phone bills and birthday cards delivered by post instead of in person — and it's confirmed by census data that reveals a precipitous decline in local numbers.Cost of doing businessThe first thing that comes to mind for many in the area is finding work.
